Mountain Climbing and Trekking
Hokuto City is surrounded by well-known peaks that are found on the List of the 100 Famous Mountains in Japan, and which mountain-lovers find irresistible, such as the Yatsugatake Range (main peak: Akatake, 2,899 m), Mt. Mizugaki (2,230 m), Mt. Kaikomagatake (2,967 m), the Mt. H?? peaks (main peak: Jizotake, 2,840 m), and Mt. Kimpu (2,599 m), but there are also many other places for those who love walking in the deep mountains. There are plans to issue a “Complete Guide to Hokuto Mountains” in the near future. Skiing, Snowboarding, Skating
The Sun Meadows Kiyosato Ski Slope, which is only two hours away from the Tokyo area, has earned a standing as a popular site where visitors can relax and enjoy skiing and snowboarding (there are restrictions on snowboarding depending on the season). The Yatsugatake Skating Center has a large track 400 m in circumference that is open from 9:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m. It’s also fun to broaden the area you can cover by wearing snowshoes and physically experience the Hokuto winter.

Visitors can see a variety of horse-riding styles from around the world at “Horse Show in Kobuchizawa,” an annual horse festival.
Horseback Riding
Hokuto City is making a city-wide effort to develop horseback riding, and there are many horses in the highland area at 1,000 m elevation at the southern foot of Mt. Yatsugatake. There are many riding clubs in the large area from Kobuchizawa to Takane, but there are so many of them in Kobuchizawa, including the Prefectural Equestrian Arena, that Kobuchizawa in particular is known as a center of horseback riding. Each riding club offers trial lessons. A feature of this area is that you can enjoy a leisurely ride outside the riding ground in the bosom of nature at the foot of Mt. Yatsugatake. Clubs offer a broad range of guidance for everyone from first-timers to those who aspire to equestrian events. The Kobuchizawa area is also known as the location for movies and TV shows in which horses appear, and it is regularly used for the filming of the Japan Broadcasting Corporation’s “Taiga Drama” series.
(Did you know?)
Mt. Yatsugatake clubs are closely connected with the Kentucky Derby (one of the world’s three big US derbies) in the US. Dr. Paul Rusch, who was a native of Louisville, Kentucky, worked to establish dairy farming throughout postwar Japan while basing himself at Kiyosato at the foot of Mt. Yatsugatake, but he also popularized equestrian events here, after the derby in his home. That is the reason that riding clubs here are American style. Especially Mr. Kenkichi Ishiguro (Kobuchizawa Town), who was handed the job of guiding the popularization of equestrian arts by Dr. Rush, represented Japan at the Montreal Olympics and became the manager of the Japanese team at the Barcelona Olympics. As such, he lends guidance in equestrian events from a worldwide perspective.

Anyone who likes the outdoor lifestyle can find a campground to their liking and enjoy the mountains, rivers, and other pleasures of nature.
Camping and Outdoor Activities
For those who want to really enjoy the outdoors, we heartily recommend camping. Imagine yourself enveloped in the magnificence of nature, delighting in the campfire-cooked food on the table by your tent, the glimmering oil lamp, the quiet sounds of a gurgling brook and singing insects, and other pleasures of splendid natural surroundings, and enjoying this with your family and friends as you commune with nature. Yamanashi Prefecture and Hokuto City have many campgrounds that take good advantage of the topography and environment, and the number of campgrounds is one of the highest in the nation. Choose a campground of your liking from a selection including auto campgrounds, daytime camping facilities, and campgrounds for people with pets.
