@It is said that Hokuto Cityfs pride ? its magnificent natural environment ? is a constant and strong stimulus to the creative motivation of artists. For that reason Hokuto City is also known as the gForest of the Arts,h and is a gathering place for artists from around Japan and other countries. For example, the artistsf colony La Roche where Chagall and Modigliani were living when they were unknowns was relocated to Musee Kiyoharu Shirakaba, which is still made widely available for use as a creative studio.
@ Every summer the Hakushu Town gDance Hakushuh festival, under the leadership of the world-renowned dancer Min Tanaka, offers a wide array of workshops and performances including dance, drama, music, performing arts, fine arts, visual arts, and crafts, which attract many visitors from abroad as well.
@ The Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts in Takane Town holds a photography contest called gYoung Portfolioh under world-famous master photographer Eikoh Hosoe, who is the museumfs director. In Nagasaka Town the art museum of the dean of art, Ikuo Hirayama, has a popular following, while in Kobuchizawa Town there is now an art museum with a collection of masterpieces from the American artist Keith Haring. This museum is also gaining prominence abroad. Kobuchizawa also has an art museum that draws children into other worlds with its large collection of works by picture book authors. Hokuto City has so many other centers of art that they cannot all be described here.
@ In the near future the city plans to issue a gHokuto City Museum Guideh (provisional title) to provide information on our many art museums and other museums, so be watching for it!
